If you need to improve your English before starting your programme at the International Study Centre, you can take our specialised English language preparation programme.

English training courses

If you do not meet the required English language level for your programme, you can start at the International Study Centre with our specialised English language training. We currently offer additional English language training for students applying for the International Year One or Pre-master’s.

Pre-Sessional English

If you need to improve your IELTS score before studying on the International Year One, then you can choose to study either the 5 week or 10 week Pre-Sessional English programme. These programmes are designed to develop your English language reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, so that you can meet the entry requirements for the International Year One programme prior to joining in October or January*.

NB: Only IELTS academic for UKVI (SELT) are accepted for Pre-Sessional English course. The Combined Visa covers both your Pre-Sessional English and International Year One Study together with your undergraduate degree study once you progress to Keele University.

*Please note you will need to pass the Language for Study assessment before you can progress to the International Year One.

Entry requirements

Pre-sessional English is available for 5 or 10 weeks. The length and start date of your course depends on your level of English

5-week programme:

If you have Academic IELTS for UKVI 5.5, you will need to study the 5-week programme, beginning in September. Once you complete the course, you can start your International Year One in October.

10-week programme:

If you have Academic IELTS for UKVI 5.0, you will need to study the 10-week programme, beginning in September. Once you complete the course, you can start your International Year One in January.

The best way to learn English

English for Pre-master’s (EPM)

The English for Pre-master’s programme is designed to help you develop your English language level (both written and spoken). We will help you improve your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills so that you can meet the entry requirements for the Pre-master’s. The course length is one or one and a half terms, starting in October or January.

At the end of your English for Pre-master’s programme, you will take an IELTS test to assess your new level of English. Once you complete the course and achieve the required IELTS score, you will be able to progress to your chosen Pre-master’s programme.

Entry requirements

English for Pre-master’s is available for 1 or 1.5 terms. The length and start date of your course depends on your level of English:

1 term:

If you have Academic IELTS for UKVI* 5.0 you will need to study 1 term of EPM, beginning in January. Once you complete the course, you can start the Pre-master's in April.

2 terms:

If you have Academic IELTS for UKVI* 4.5 you will need to study 1.5 terms of EPM beginning in October. Once you complete the course, you can start the Pre-master's in April.
